Sacred Heart Academy Students Celebrate 60 Years with
Birthday Party
Students, faculty and administrators celebrated Sacred Heart
Academy’s 60th birthday on Thursday, February 1. Plans
called for a birthday cake, ice cream, balloons and, of
course, presents. In this case, the presents were books
collected by the students that will be donated to Literacy
Volunteers of Central Connecticut, Inc. ”Volunteers helping
people improve their lives through English literacy,” is the
mission of Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut.
Throughout this entire school year, students have
participated in “60 Days of Caring,” to honor the 60th
Anniversary of Sacred Heart. The program provides an
opportunity for students to put into practice the Sacred
Heart spirit of giving by serving the community. Through
their co-curricular clubs as well as independent
initiatives, students are contributing in a myriad of ways,
from cooking for Life Haven to assisting with students and
maintenance projects at St. Rose of Lima School in New Haven
to knitting shawls for cancer patients, conducting food and
book drives, and much more. “Each of our constituencies has
chosen their own way of acknowledging the school’s 60th
Anniversary and our students have selected “60 Days of
Caring” - we are so proud of them,” commented an
administrator at the Academy.
The Academy officially opened its 60th Anniversary Year this
past fall with a 60th Anniversary Mass and Celebration. The
entire constituency was invited to attend. Sacred Heart
Academy was founded on Green Street in New Haven by Sr. M.
Antonine Signorielli, ASCJ as a secondary school for 17
young women in 1946 and moved to its present location in
1956. Sixty years later, the mission of Sr. Antonine
continues – to challenge and support students, according to
school administrators.
To mark the 60th year and to ensure the future of the
Academy, the school has embarked on a major gifts
fundraising initiative according to Principal Sr. Ritamary
Schulz, ASCJ. “The 60th Anniversary Plan will raise funds
for science, athletics and endowment for scholarships. Funds
are being raised for a new science complex which includes
state of the art chemistry, physics, molecular biology
research and prep room laboratories. Monies raised for
athletics will be earmarked for new seating, landscaping and
scoreboards and increased endowment will provide qualified
students in need of financial aid the opportunity to attend
Sacred Heart Academy,” according to Principal, Sr. Ritamary
Schulz.
Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic college preparatory
school, founded in 1946 by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary. The
Academy has an enrollment of 500 students who hail from New
Haven, Fairfield, Hartford, Middlesex and New London
counties and successfully prepares young woman in grades 9
-12 for learning, service and achievement in a global
society.
