The Hillhouse Scholars Program was founded in late 2002 by a
group of New Haven and Yale community members to support
families and young people in the City of New Haven. The
program provides children of low income families with a
partial tuition scholarship to attend Sacred Heart, and
pairs each scholar with a mentor from the Yale graduate
community. Mentors support scholars in their intellectual
and personal development, and the community of scholars
comes together for service work, entertainment, and
informational sessions on college preparation.
The Hillhouse Scholars Program evaluates applicants for admission on four criteria:
1)
Individual achievement and enthusiasm
2) Family support
3) Income level
4) Residential proximity to New Haven
The
expectations and activities of the Program are as follows.
The Program expects all Scholars to maintain a B average, contribute
some time to community service, and attend fall and spring
events for the program. The Program's hope is that all Scholars will
continue on to leading four year colleges and universities.
The Program asks parents, Scholars, and Mentors to make a written
commitment to comply with the expectations of the Program.
The Hillhouse Scholars Program is a nonprofit organization
operating under the laws of the state of Connecticut. For
