Sacred Heart Academy students and faculty make extensive use
of technology.
Wireless Network and Laptop Use
Beginning with the Class of 2009, every incoming freshman
will arrive with her own notebook ("laptop") computer.
In anticipation of this, every faculty member has been
supplied with a notebook computer this year. The entire school building is
equipped with wireless access points. Access to the
school’s network infrastructure is available from all parts
of the school building. Students in upper classes are
offered the option of bringing their personal laptops to school.
Classrooms
Every classroom at SHA is equipped with a desktop computer
with eInstruction Classroom
Performance System instruction modules, access to the World
Wide Web, and a wide range of
software applications.
Math, science, and computer courses integrate technology
through the development of computer programs, design of Web
sites, and the use of educational software, graphing
calculators, and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment.
Biology, Chemistry and Biotech/Physics laboratories, along
with regular classrooms, are used for science classes.
An automated DNA sequencer, PCR machines and UV
Spectrophotometer are housed in the Biotech lab and used by
students.
The Foreign Language Department uses the Sony LLC-8000
system in the Multimedia Learning Center for interactive
learning activities in target languages.
Library and Computer Lab
The Pentium Lab and Mary and James DiMeo Library have been
newly equipped for student use with 40 Dell P4 desktop
computers with plasma screens. Students are given a
tutorial on the extensive databases available at our Library
Media Center. Students use the computers in our Lab
and Media Center to research and compose papers, and check
email.
Web Development and Email
Upon entering SHA, students are given email accounts and network
file storage folders to facilitate teaching and learning.
All faculty members is asked to create a Web site as an integral
part of their course presentation and to promote efficient distribution
of
materials. Faculty Web sites and the addition of an
advanced
course concentrating on Web authoring will serve to make the
World Wide Web an even larger part of our technology arsenal.
Media Production Center
A fully equipped center used for production of a daily
morning show, Good Morning SHAmerica, enables students to
learn the complexities of television studio production.
Students are instructed in the use of the video camera and
audio equipment, in editing oral presentations, lighting,
scripting and directing techniques.
