The Social Studies Department requires students to complete
3 credits in Social Studies. These include United States
Government, U.S. History, Western Civilization, and a .5
credit elective. The Social Studies curriculum provides
students with a broad knowledge of the past and skills in
the critical process of gathering, analyzing and
interpreting historical information.
United States Government

This introductory course emphasizes the development of study
and critical thinking skills. It is a survey of the
development of the United States Constitution, the three
branches of Government, the Election Process, and government
today. Outside materials from the Internet, newspapers, and
multimedia sources are used to enhance the student’s
understanding, function, and interaction of local, state,
and national governments.
United States History

This is a survey of American history. Emphasis is placed on
the political, economic, and cultural development of
American society. Social studies skills and historical
research skills are strengthened throughout the course.
Western Civilization

This course is a study of major European events and
movements from ancient to medieval to modern times. In
addition to classwork, students prepare class presentations
and independent writing assignments.
Honors Western Civilization

This course covers major events, key trends, and progressive
issues in history from ancient to medieval to modern times.
Students are expected to read primary source materials,
write analytical papers, and commit important dates to
memory. Prerequisites: Minimum 3.33 in previous Social

Law

This course offers an opportunity to study law and the legal
order as an important way of restoring, maintaining and
creating social order. The study includes discussions of
criminal law, court procedure, and individual rights and
liberties.
Europe in the Twentieth Century

This course presents an analysis of Europe at the peak of
its power in 1900, the destructive wars in the first half of
the century, the division of Europe during the Cold War and
the development of a unified Europe. Students will examine
political, social and cultural trends.
Twentieth Century World History

introduced to the world beyond the North Atlantic community.
This course considers the culture, politics and history of
nations in Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Issues in the U.S. 1945-Present

examines U.S. history from 1945 to the present, focuses on
foreign policy through the Cold War to the present, and
considers domestic issues that have shaped our nation today,
such as the Civil Rights movement, the Women’s movement, the
decade of the sixties, and the conservative resurgence.
AP U.S Government (Advanced Placement) 964govAP QP
5.0 GR. 12 YEAR 1 CREDIT
This course provides students with an in-depth knowledge of
the intricacies of the United States government, including
the founding of the government, the Constitution, political
behavior and political parties, interest groups, the media,
the institutions of government and the formulation of
domestic and foreign policy. In addition, students acquire
the sophisticated analytical skills needed for social
science courses taken at the college level. Students write
research and policy papers and are required to take the AP
U.S. Government exam in May. Prerequisites: Minimum 3.67 in
previous Social Studies and English course. AP US History is
strongly recommended
Psychology

This course provides an introduction to psychology to
students who have completed the social studies department
requirements. Topics may include neuroscience, nature versus
nurture, human development, sensation and perception, states
of consciousness, learning, memory, thinking and language,
intelligence motivation, emotion, personality, disorders and
therapy, and social psychology. Requirements include
readings and experiential learning projects. Prerequisites:
Satisfactory completion of department requirements
AP U.S. History (Advanced Placement)

This course covers the history of the United States in a
manner designed to prepare students to take the required
Advanced Placement exam in May. Students read and analyze
primary source documents and write analytical and research
papers. Prerequisites: minimum 3.67 in previous social
studies and English courses
AP Psychology (Advanced Placement)

The aim of this Advanced Placement course is to provide
students with the equivalent to that obtained in college
introductory psychology courses. This study focuses
biological bases of behavior, states of consciousness,
motivation and emotion, personality theory, educational
testing, abnormal behavior, and therapy. The AP exam in May
is required. Prerequisites: Minimum 3.67 average in current
or previous Social Studies and Science courses.
