must take this course for both semesters to obtain credit.
Students of various levels of proficiency (beginner to
advanced) must already own (or rent) and know the rudiments
of their instruments. Additional instruction is given to
build an ensemble capable of playing musical literature of
various styles and periods. Performances are scheduled
throughout the year, including a Christmas and spring
recital. This course MEETS ON MONDAYS from 2:15-3:30 PM and
at specially scheduled rehearsals. Prerequisite: Approval of

Seminar on American Music

Music in
America spans a wide spectrum of styles and genres as
diverse as the cultural makeup of the nation. Designed with
students of both musical and non-musical backgrounds in
mind, this course explores the roots of a variety of
American musical traditions. From cultural antecedents to
the dissemination and metamorphosis of musical styles to the
ever-changing soundscape of contemporary trends, the class
examines the development of the musical heritage of the
Americas. Topics include psalmody, jazz, rock, and beyond.
As a seminar, progress in the course is driven by
student-led class discussions.
Music History
A historical survey in two parts, Music History traces
the development of Western music from the Middle Ages to the
present. Student may elect to take either of two,
semesterlong units, or opt to complete a year-long sequence
spanning the major epochs of Western music. Extensive
listening to recorded examples will be a major component of
the course and students will be encouraged to hear music in
live performance. A basic knowledge of the rudiments of
music and writing skills are assumed.
Music History I

Western music from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century
this course surveys both the literature of music and the
data of written history. Prerequisites: Intro. to Fine Arts.
Music History II

A
continuation of Music History I, this course begins with the
eighteenth century and extends through major composers of
the twentieth century. Prerequisites: Intro. to Fine Arts.
Music History I is encouraged but not required.
Concert Choir
380chorus QP 4.33 GR. 10,11,12 YEAR 1 CREDIT Students
focus their study on a variety of sacred and secular choral
repertoires drawn from the Western art music tradition,
world music, and popular song. Through rehearsals and
performance, students develop their vocal abilities,
sightsinging skills, and sense of ensemble. Study culminates
in major performances each academic term both at SHA and
other venues. Often, collaborative concerts with other
schools, recording sessions, and tours are scheduled. No
audition required, although each participant will be heard
individually to determine vocal range.
Honors Chamber Choir
390choirH QP 4.67 GR. 10,11,12 YEAR .5 CREDIT In this
course, students work to achieve excellence in the
performance of choral music. A wide variety of literature,
different from that of the Concert Choir, is studied with
the aim of learning many styles of music. Through intensive
rehearsals and performance, students develop their vocal
abilities, sight-singing skills and sense of ensemble.
Members of the Chamber Choir also serve as section leaders
in the Concert Choir. The chamber Choir performs in public
on many occasions, both for the SHA community and beyond.
Audition required. Meets after school from 3:30- 4:30 PMl;
attendance at Concert Choir rehearsals is required. Members
must sign up for Concert Choir that meets during the day.
