The Business and Computer curriculum is an integral part of the total
academic structure and fosters the use of computers with
related software in an academic environment. Courses are
designed to study the current business applications
including data collection, information management, Internet
communication and research. A minimum of 0.5 credits is
required for graduation.
Computer Applications
114cmptrapp QP 4.33 GR 9 SEM 1,2 .5 CREDIT This
one-semester course provides a thorough introduction to
computer applications. The course begins with an
introduction to computer hardware and software, including
related concepts and terminology. The balance of the course
allows students to develop proficiencies in touch-typing and
three primary types of business software applications: word
processing, spreadsheet, and presentation graphics. In
addition, students gain exposure to Internet communications
and research.
Advanced Computer Applications and Web Design
125advcmptr QP 4.33 GR 10-12 SEM 1,2 .5 CREDIT
This one-semester elective helps students develop skills in
designing, developing and maintaining web sites through
in-depth training in the use of Microsoft FrontPage. Though
this program greatly facilitates web publishing, students
will also gain considerable knowledge and understanding of
the syntax and structure of HTML (hypertext markup
language), the language that drives the internet. In
addition, students will learn practical skills in the use of
digital cameras and scanners in preparing content for the
web. Through the use of Adobe Photoshop Elements, students
will become proficient in editing and manipulating digital
images, whether scans or photographs. This will constitute
about one-third of the course. Content and direction may be
influenced by the prior experiences and interests of the
individual students enrolled, to allow each of them to get
the most out of her experience. In addition to several
individual projects, students may be tasked with creating
and maintaining some portion of the Sacred Heart Academy
school internet or intranet websites.
AP Computer Science (Advanced Placement)
190cmptrAP QP 5.0 GR 10-12 YEAR 1 CREDIT This full-year
elective covers the recommended AP Computer Science (A)
curriculum, which includes solving problems, developing
algorithms, writing pseudocode, and writing stylistically
sound programs in Java. Students are prepared to take the AP
Computer Science A Exam in May. Note: This is NOT a web
design or HTML course. Prerequisite: 3.67 or higher in math
and science AND permission from the instructor
Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management
155mngmt QP 4.33 GR 11,12 SEM 1 .5 CREDIT This
one-semester course is designed to appeal to students who
may aspire to business ownership or to pursue the study of
business administration at the post-secondary level after
graduation from Sacred Heart Academy. This course provides a
content foundation upon which advanced study can be built.
It also provides insights into the major facets of business
ownership and management.
Economics
166econ QP 4.33 GR 11, 12 SEM 2 .5 CREDIT This one-semester
course is an introduction to economic concepts, theories,
and practices. Topics include: comparative economic systems,
price and wage determination, business cycles, money,
banking, Federal Reserve policy, public finance, and
international trade and finance. This course can also be
used as a Social Studies requirement.
