John G. Martin Foundation Awards Grant to Sacred Heart
Academy for Molecular Science Research Laboratory
The John G. Martin Foundation of Farmington has awarded
Sacred Heart Academy of Hamden a $35,000 grant for a
Molecular Science Research Laboratory. This new laboratory,
which is a major component of the Academy’s 60th Anniversary
Plan, will provide new opportunities for scientific study
and research according to school administrators.
Construction of the John G. Martin Molecular Science
Research Laboratory is slated for the summer of 2007 pending
continued fundraising results. An official dedication, with
trustees from the Foundation, will take place upon
completion of the project scheduled for early September
2007.
Plans call for completely transforming the existing 600
square foot classroom into a molecular biology laboratory
and custom designing the space to house the specialized
equipment necessary for students to conduct research. The
new laboratory will include a central research island and
peripheral stations, equipment specific to research
including an autoclave, 2 PCR machines, a
photo-documentation system with hood and uv transilluminator,
a uv spectrophotometer, microcentrifuges, heating block,
freezer, distillation apparatus, computer and printer, and
single capillary automated sequencer: ABI Prism 310 Genetic
Analyzer, a ceiling projector and screen and a climate
controlled environment. Project architect is Edward Saad
Associates Architects.
“The John G. Martin Foundation Molecular Science Research
Laboratory will not only enable the continuation of a highly
successful and unique program in scientific study and
research at Sacred Heart Academy, but will also provide
additional opportunities for our young women to expand the
technologies used. This will further enhance the curriculum
and will advance independent work in the latest biochemical
and gene sequencing technologies,” according to the
Principal of the Academy, Sr. Ritamary Schulz, ASCJ.
In announcing the grant, President of the Foundation, Frank
M. Loehmann, Jr. of Cheshire, said that his board
unanimously voted to approve the funding and was most
pleased to be a part of this very worthwhile project.
Sacred Heart Academy has received attention from both
national and local news media for their outstanding and
innovative science programs, particularly the cutting-edge
biotechnology program. The Catholic college preparatory
school, founded in 1946 by the Apostles of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary. The
Academy has an enrollment of 500 students who hail from New
Haven, Fairfield, Hartford, Middlesex and New London
counties and successfully prepares young woman in grades 9
-12 for learning, service and achievement in a global
society.
